Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy

Approved 30th October 2020

Trajectory Theatre is a charity based in the South East. Our ambition is to advance digital arts by combining immersive technologies like augmented and virtual reality with traditional theatre practice.

We think differently about the world we live in. We challenge the traditional by looking beyond the auditorium. And we view diversity as the key for creativity. That is why diversity, equality, and inclusion is at the heart of our [organisation] and the wider Trajectory community.

At Trajectory, we work hard to ensure that we are fair and accessible to everyone, including people who are:

  • creating [and/or delivering] digital art as part of Trajectory Theatre;
  • experiencing [and/or participating] in the digital art created by Trajectory Theatre;
  • engaging with Trajectory Theatre, either as an employee or prospective employee, contractor supplying goods or services, or people volunteering with us

Or to put it more simple: Everyone’s invited to be part of the Trajectory community.

Trajectory Theatre requires that everyone engaging with us in any manner adheres to, and is covered by, our Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Policy. The policy is shared on our website for easy access of all stakeholders.

Accessibility

At Trajectory Theatre, we want to democratise digital art by making it more accessible. That means representing the diversity of the United Kingdom in the creative process and product. To achieve this objective, we intend to:

  • Increase and diversify our audience base, including reaching those inexperienced with immersive technology
  • Aid other makers by sharing research and learnings, and by that foster greater collaboration and inclusion in the industry

Inclusivity

As part of our pledge to make everyone feel welcome and included in the Trajectory  community, we want to challenge structural racism and inequality. For us, this means to:

  • Be actively anti-racist [within the Trajectory community]
  • Identify and address specific barriers that people from Black, Asian and Minoritised backgrounds face [in our sector]. We also want to do more to support other people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised, including (but not limited to) people in the LGBTQ+ community, people with mental or physical disabilities and people of different faiths
  • Help to address issues of gender discrimination
  • Consider how we can help to provide access to the arts for those with no or low income

Making our commitments a reality

We recognised that accessibility and inclusivity are ongoing and everyday commitments. We must champion these values both within our organisation as well as in all activities we undertake, by:

  • Investing in and delivering mandatory unconscious bias training for staff and trustees
  • Having difficult conversations on issues relevant to race and discrimination
  • Establishing safe spaces
  • Promoting a positive working and creative environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and feel welcome
  • Posting any job openings in a wide range of forums and recruit, promote and compensate based on merit
  • Being more transparent on our progress

Governance

Trajectory Theatre works with its Board of Trustees to monitor diversity, equality and inclusion across the organisation, its creative programme and community engagement. The composition of the Board is reviewed on a regular basis.
